This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Sunday January 5, an adult male NORTHERN CARDINAL was visiting a
feeder in Lewiston, ID. The bird was seen by several individuals,
including myself, Carole Vande Voorde and Dan Svingen. The bird is
cooperative. It is at the residence of the Lloyd and Helen Hogden. To
get to the bird, take US 12 west into Lewiston, cross the Clearwater
River, and at the first traffic light, head up the hill on 21st Street
(aka restaurant row). Follow it up to 16th Avenue and turn right (west).
Follow 16th Avenue to 8th Street, which I think is the second traffic
light. Turn left (south) on 8th Street and follow it as it heads up hill.
Just past Mayfair Court, turn right onto Mayfair Drive, a curvy road
going up. Stay left onto Mayfair Ridge continuing to go uphill. The
Hogden's live at 2975 Mayfair Ridge in a brown house with brick
accent, on the left side of the street. They are posting recent
observation times on their front door. If you go for this bird and see
it, please let the hotline know.

If you're coming from Clarkston, WA, take the US 12 bridge across the
Snake River and turn right onto Snake River Avenue. Follow Snake
River Avenue to the first traffic light which is at 16th Avenue. Turn
left (east) at the light and follow it to the next traffic light which is
8th Street. Turn right (south) onto 8th and follow the directions as 75%
(east) at the light and follow it to the next traffic light which is 8th
Street. Turn right (south) onto 8th and follow the directions as
described above.

On Saturday, December 28, Dan and Ila Svingen report a HARLAN'S
RED-TAILED HAWK south of Grangeville, ID along the Whitebird
Battlefield Autotour. The bird was near stop #5. Also along the
autotour, from the switchbacks down to the town of Whitebird, the
Svingens saw about 500 CALIFORNIA QUAIL and 50 GRAY
PARTRIDGE. Just north of Whitebird, along US 95 at milepost 227 was
a single CHUKAR. ID DeLorme p. 54-55, C at the crease.

Ila Svingen reports a juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON along
the "stream" that flows east from the big levee pond (aka West Pond) in
Lewiston, ID this past week. Take US 12 west into Lewiston, cross the
Clearwater River, and bear right to the stop light at 18th Street. Turn
right and follow the signs for US 12 west. In about a mile, you'll come
to the parking area on the right side of the road for the levee pond.

A NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL is patrolling in Moscow, ID on the east end
of the UI campus. Look for the bird from the UI Admin Building east to
US 95 and further east along Styner Street, north to Sweet Avenue and
south to the area around Brown's Furniture.

I'm pretty sick of this weather so I'm going birding tomorrow. I hope
you can do the same.

Good birding!
