Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday January 9. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

A subadult YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was found January 1 south of Fern Ridge
Reservoir. It is still being seen. Take Highway 126 west from Eugene, turn
south on Nelson Road, continue to the T junction with Contrell Road. Turn
right onto the gravel road and continue to Halderson Road. Drive south on
Halderson to the first sharp turn. The bird is seen in this area. A
sapsucker found on the January 4 Klamath Falls Christmas Count may also
have been a YELLOW-BELLIED.

The female KING EIDER is still being seen below the Highway 101 Bridge over
Yaquina Bay. OLDSQUAWS are in this area, and at least three PALM WARBLERS
are along the nature trail at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.

The Coquille Valley Christmas Count recorded 146 species this year. The
best birds were three BARN and two VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS. A PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVER and a RED KNOT were seen the day before. 105 BLACK PHOEBES,
24 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, and 24 WHITE-TAILED KITES were record highs.

The ROSS' GOOSE continues to be seen on the Nestucca NWR, near Pacific
City. The HARRIS' SPARROW remains near 2d and Trade Street in Bay City. Two
SNOWY OWLS are now at the South Jetty of the Columbia River, but the
Tillamook birds were not seen this week.

On January 4 a WHITE PELICAN was observed floating on a flooded pond beside
the road between the city of Vancouver and Vancouver Lake. By January 7 it
had moved over to the flooded Pellet Plant Meadow on Sauvie Island.

On January 4 a SWAMP SPARROW was found in south Tigard, near Portland. It
was seen on the south side of Tigard High School, just south of the SW
88th. Place cul-de-sac. A PACIFIC LOON was near Canby January 4.

A SNOWY OWL is now being seen at the trailer Court at the end of Mountain
View Lane in Forest Grove. It is found flying about the trailer court and
sitting on the roof tops. On January 4 a flock of 12 loudly calling
TRUMPETER SWANS were flying near the Forest Grove Ponds.

A GREAT GRAY OWL is now being seen near Silver Falls State Park, near
Silverton. It has been regularly observed from nearby roadways. A GRAY
CATBIRD was observed in north Corvallis January 8. If interested in seeing
this bird contact Ulo Kiigenmagi at 541-752-1294. A MOCKINGBIRD is now in
northwest Corvallis, and a BARRED OWL was called in along Bellfountain
Road, near Mill Hill west of Finley Refuge January 5.

The CATTLE EGRET continues to be seen in Alvadore, northwest of Eugene. A
breeding plumaged female RED PHALAROPE was seen January 2 near the
intersection of Delta Highway and Goodpasture Road in Eugene.

The snow covered January 4 Hood River Christmas Count recorded a male SURF
SCOTER, two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER along the
Columbia River. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW is now coming to a Hood River
feeder.

Thats it for this week.
