The best place to start is "Birding by Ear", (for the western
birds). It has most of the commonly heard bird songs in the
west AND, most importantly, gives a system for mentally classifying
bird songs into categories (trillers, sing-songers, etc.).
I am also "visually challenged" (i.e., can barely pass a driving
test) and this tape was what really got me to learn bird
songs. After this one, your wife can advance to the type that
just give a name followed by a song. My copy is a tape, but I'm
pretty sure it's on a CD now.
