Tyler and I found the bird on Saturday morning around 11:30.
Tyler mentioned hearing something when we hiked up but we didn't pursue it
until we got down. The bird was very loud and obvious and chased off other
birds near it, as if defending territory. Tyler and I were able to see it 4
different times today and yesterday.
The bird was not in the riparian area at the entrance to the canyon, but
farther up in the sage scrub. The bird is on the left side of the road. On
the way to it you will pass a large Ponderosa Pine all by itself on the left
and after that you should start listening/looking for the bird. It
frequents the area past the tree to where a fenced area starts. All in all
it is about 1/2 a mile from the entrance It should be pretty easy to find.
For those of you that don't know the canyon. It is on Wenas road about
4 miles or so south of the junction to the Wenas camp ground, (on the paved
road).
Other interesting birds we saw this weekend: Least flycatcher and Gray
Catbird on Maloy rd., which Ruth and Patrick Sullivan told us about. We
also had 4 species of owls last night, Flammulated, Western Screech, Great
Horned, and Northern Saw-Whet Owls.
