When we visited the Yucatan, I was not yet a birder. So, I'm not sure how
this really ranks in terms of great birding spots, but it's one of the
experiences that I remember as getting me interested in birds. I would
visit Tulum, for a lot of reasons. To my eye, it was one of the most
beautiful set of ruins. it is set right on the beach, and looks like a
garden resort. Unlike many of the other ruins, there are little houses that
you can actually imagine living in. Twined all around them are vines with
bright orange trumpet-shaped flowers, exactly matching the color of the
orioles flitting through the bushes (later from my photographs I was able to
recognize Altamira and Orange Orioles). I also have pictures of
Scissor-tailed flycatchers and Magnificent Frigatebirds (and these are just
the birds that I photographed). We also found Cave Swallows at Uxmal. I'm
waiting for the day when I can go back to Yucatan, WITH binoculars. I would
like to see any responses to this message, too, for my "someday" file.
