I certainly can't give a definitive answer, but I'll suggest we all think
along the lines of pollutants such as PCBs, especially those known to act
as estrogen disrupters. You should all read "Our Stolen Future," by
Colborn, Dumanoski, and Myers (Dutton, 1996), which discusses the huge
problem of environmental contamination by these compounds. Some of the
disruptive effects include abnormal growths of bills and other organs in
birds. We should ask, I think, whether the doves and other species in
which these deformities are being seen are especially likely to pick up
high levels of the pollutants.
