We were trailering in the Yucatan just three years ago and found very good
birding. We saw a flamingo at Rio Lagartos, but others found great flocks of
them in the area. Even more impressive to us were the groups of boat-billed
herons in the mangroves across the channel to the N of town (we were carrying
kayaks, but I'm sure boat transportation is available in town). Lagartos is
a sleepy but pleasant little town. Look at the local vultures; some - at
least - are Lesser Yellow-headed. There is also interesting birding in the
dry scrub a little south and inland of the town itself. For the whole area
of Yucutan I strongly recommend reading Chapter 20 of Roland Wauer's A
Naturalist's Mexico. In fact, I recommend the whole book, but it makes it
very hard to stay home.

Over on the east coast, we had excellent birding in all of the major
archeological areas, especially Coba, despite the groups of tourists. We
camped farther down the coast, a little N of Tulum and had good luck
bicycling inland along the maze of little roads heading in to little ranches
chopped out of the scrub. The country is still largely wooded, a
considerable improvement from the denuded pasturage which constitutes most of
the Gulf coast of Mexico.
