The cover of this week's Mercer Island Reporter shows hundred(s) of gulls
standing on the large flat roof of the north end QFC. They have also been seen
on other flat roofs in the business district. For years (over fifty years
according to one of my neighbors) flocks of thousands of mainly Glaucous-winged
gulls have followed a daily rountine of flying over Mercer Island. They must
roost at night somewhere near the U of W, fly south each morning just after dawn
to the Renton area, then return north again in the evening.

Is anyone following this daily movement of gulls? Any guesses why they have
recently decided to take a break at the QFC? (The Starbucks is right across the
street but they don't seems to be interested.) Also, on CBC day they either
didn't fly or took another route and consequently our gull count was way down.

Thanks for any insight on this issue.
