But weren't those warblers named before anyone realized that
they are hybrids (i.e., they were mistaken for distinct
species)? If so, these are not really cases of naming hybrids
as such.

As to a shorter name for designating the hybrid gulls in question,
how about "Wegugwgu" [pronounced way-goo-gwah-goo, e.g.]? ("Hofi"
is a precedent.) Or "Wegwgu," which is even terser...
