Washington Gap Analysis is Going to Print

The Washington Gap Analysis Project (WAGAP) is pleased to announce its
Final Report will be sent to the printer soon. The objective of WAGAP
has been to evaluate the protection of biodiversity in Washington State
by identifying those land cover types and vertebrate species (excluding
fish) under-represented on lands managed specifically for
biodiversity. Toward this goal, we have mapped land cover and
vertebrate distributions within the state. This information, including
the gap analysis has been compiled into a 5-volume report. In order to
minimize printing costs, we need an estimate of the number of copies
that will be sold. If you plan to purchase one or more of the volumes
described below, please send your address (to kelly at u.washington.edu
NOT tweeters!) and the volumes you want.

Do not send money. We are only looking for an estimate of demand.
Prices are estimates and the final price will depend on the number
printed. Volumes will be printed by the Washington Cooperative Fish
and Wildlife Research Unit, Univ. of Wa, except for Volume 4, which
will be printed by the Seattle Audubon Society, but available through
the Coop. Please respond by January 31, 1997.

The Land Cover Volume is a description of the state's vegetation zones,
with their current land cover and conservation status.

Vertebrate Volumes have, for each species, a brief discussion of its
habitat requirements, current status, and how the distributions were
modeled and (on the facing page) a map with the modeled distributions
and location data (mostly museum records for herps and mammals; mostly
BBA data for birds).

The Analysis Volume is an analysis of the conservation status of land
cover and breeding vertebrates (excluding fish).

You will be notified when the volumes are printed, which will probably
be in about 3 or 4 months.


If you want an indication of what the vertebrate maps will look like,
some maps are on the Gap web site. Most of the herp and bird maps are
posted, though they are early draft versions. The posted mammal maps are
current, but I have only had time to turn a handful into GIF files (opossum
and a few shrews). The Gap site address is
