I agree that donations to organizations in develping countries are
important. But I don't believe it should be ruled out for our suburban (or
other) schools.

If given the choice between the Nikes for a year or the binoculars for a
lifetime, far too many would choose the Nikes. Peer opinion could prevent
kids who might otherwise be interested in bird watching from getting
involved. This is an observation made after fourteen years working with kids.
