Attached are the results of an unofficial Christmas Bird Count conducted
Saturday, January, 11th, 1997. The original intent was to center the count
on Lyle, Washington, known in Washington for Acorn Woodpeckers and Lesser
Goldfinches. Lyle is about half-way between Hood River, OR and The Dallas,
OR, on the Washington side of the Columbia, at the Klickitat River estuary.

This year I wanted to do an informal count to check out how the draft count
circle worked in the field. The original circle, centered in Lyle, slightly
overlaped the Hood River count circle near Mosier, OR. By moving the circle
to the east to include Horse Thief Lake on the east, and Rowland Lake on the
west, the city of The Dalles becomes a part of the count. This count circle
center is Doug's Beach, one of the premier windsurfing sites in the
Gorge...during the summer. The results reflect this revised, more easterly
circle.

I hope to conduct the count next Christmas season, on the first reasonable
Saturday following Christmas. This year the count was delayed because of 15
inches of snow, ice and freezing rain; I-84 was closed and driving
conditions were generally treacherous.

The day following the count 6 Tundra Swans were seen in the Klickitat River
estuary. Missing species that should increase future count numbers include
American Robin, Spotted Towhee, Redhead, nuthatches, and kinglets.
Highlights included an albinistic Red-tail Hawk, 4 Lewis Woodpeckers, 4 Bald
Eagles, a Northern Shrike, and 6 Barrow's Goldeneye.

There are a variety habitats for hiking and/or birding including Catherine
Creek, Tom McCall State Park (Rowena Plateau), Horse Thief Butte, Mayer
State Park, Rowland Lake and the other lakes along the Columbia, the
Klickitat River canyon and estuary, and Balch Lake.

I hope the results come through. They are converted to ASCII Text, but who
knows how they will come out. Please let me know how I can improve this
effort for next year.
