Tweeters Readers might be interested in a report from the Duluth (and north)
environs:

I spent 4 days there last week courtesy of VENT. This is one trip I'd take
via a tour guide and van. 40 degrees below zero, wind chill minus 60 and
counting.

Interestingly, only one Snowy Owl (do we have most of them south of the
border this year?) A couple of Great Grays, 5 Northern Hawk Owls, one live
(and 25 dead) Boreal Owls. Many had bloody claws from trying to get through
the encrusted and very deep snow cover. It's likely they starved to death.
Larger Gray and Hawk Owls apparently have less of a problem.

Also saw 7 Spruce Grouse together on a snowy road. NO Redpolls of either
species nor any Snow Buntings. Probably the severe weather forced them
southward. A few Pine Grosbeaks and a solitary Bohemian Waxwing and many
Crossbills of both species were spotted. Total bird species: thirty-five. A
good job given the conditions. I recommend the trip.
