In response to Mary McCann's question about why her birds weren't coming to the
new feeder, it might take a while for your birds to change their "culture" and
accept a new style of feeder. A tube feeder usually appeals to a different set
of birds from a tray feeder, which it sounds like your wooden one was. For
instance, here in Anchorage, Pine Grosbeaks would come to a tray feeder but not
to a tube. Common Redpolls will come to either but prefer the tray type, or seed
on the ground. Chickadees will come to either, but with perhaps a slight
preference for tube, etc. The tubes are neater and easier to maintain; probably
also less susceptible to the growth of molds, too, thus safer for the birds.
