This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for January 19,

On January 11, Dennis Rockwell discovered a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on the
monthly Bateman Island nature walk. Later that day, he found a EURASIAN
WIGEON drake on the Columbia Park Lagoon, 2 MEW GULLS on the Two Rivers Park
lagoon and a HARRIS' SPARROW in a flock of White-crowned Sparrows along the
Two Rivers Nature Trail.

The Eurasian Wigeon was independently reported by Bill and Nancy LaFramboise
on January 11. On January 12, they had the good fortune to find a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK along Sharp Road and a flock of 7 GRAY PARTRIDGE along Case Road.
Both roads are on the southwest side of Rattlesnake Mountain. See DeLorme
Atlas page 38.

Scott Dietert observed a Varied Thrush in his birdbath in North Richland on
January 14 and later that morning noted a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in the birdbath.

On January 16, Nancy LaFramboise, Ruth Fischer and I (Bob Woodley) visited
the McNary National Wildlife Refuge to view an unidentified buteo which was
similar to the one that appeared 1 year ago. The bird was discovered the
previous day by Mike Denny of College Place. Among other birds at the
refuge were a BLUE PHASE SNOW GOOSE and 3 Bald Eagles.

On January 18, Warren Hall of Spokane and I observed an adult COOPER'S HAWK
along Canyon Street in south Richland, 2 MEW GULLS on the Kennewick sewage
pond and the renown WESTERN SCRUB-JAY near the corner of E 6th and Kingwood
Streets in East Kennewick.

Lastly, today (1/19) Gary Moore of Eltopia reported a SPOTTED TOWHEE at his
feeder. This species seems to be particularly numerous this year.
