Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday January 30. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls

The KING EIDER, YELLOW-BILLED LOON and the other interesting birds continue
to be seen below the bridge at Yaquina Bay.

At least one TUFTED DUCK continues to be seen among the swarm of diving
ducks at the county line on the east side of Sauvie Island. On January 23
an adult gray phased GYRFALCON was observed flying westward over Oak Island
and disappearing into the westside farmlands on Sauvie Island. The next day
it was seen sitting on a farm field off Sauvie Island Road near the west
side county line. It then flew westward into the Scappoose Bottomlands.

The EMPEROR GOOSE continues to be seen along the Sandy River at Lewis and
Clark State Park.

On January 24 a BURROWING OWL was flushed from the driftwood at the base of
the South Jetty of the Columbia River. Up to five SNOWY OWLS have been seen
during the week about the shorebird flats near the jetty.

The SNOWY OWL along the South Jetty Road at the mouth of the Siuslaw River
continues to be found. The Junction City bird is apparently in the area but
moves around so much birders cannot catch up with it. On January 23 another
SNOWY OWL was observed sitting on a dike near Mohoff Pond in Ankeny NWR
near Salem. It apparently has not been relocated.

The WHITE PELICAN continues to be seen on Kirk Pond near Fern Ridge
Reservoir near Eugene. A TURKEY VULTURE was in Eugene January 23.

Large flocks of sparrows have appeared on Sauvie Island and in the
Willamette Valley during the past week or so. The majority appear to be
GOLDEN-CROWNED, WHITE-CROWNED, and SAVANNAH SPARROWS.

Tuesday February 4 is Birders Night at Portland Audubon. Meet in Audubon
House at 7:30 PM for the latest birding news and view some outstanding bird
slides.
