Yup, I agree with Debbie. And having seen my first Resplendent Quetzals and
Golden-browed Chlorophonia on the margins of shade plantations in Panama, I
have to say that I think most of the birds would agree as well. I doubt
very much if these birds or many others would look fondly on a monoculture
"sun plantation"... While it is a good point (from Kelly) that ecological
choices are often more complex than first meets the eye, in this case, I
would go with the at least somewhat sustainable shade plantations, given
that it is highly unlikely that most conservationists, birders, or the
general public are likely to stop drinking coffee any time soon.

Companies such as Starbucks can have great impact on the way things get
done, if enogh pressure can be exserted upon them to change...
