Tweeters,
Much thanks to those who've made suggestions. Michael Price wrote:

Sorry Michael, I was in bed when I heard it, and by the time I was up, it
wasn't around to be heard any more.

Michael and Gail Spitler suggested Wilson's warbler. There is a resident
Wilson's here, and I'm very familiar with that call; this was quite
different. I could have mentioned that, but I wasn't sure I was hearing a
warbler. By the way, I saw that WIWA last week with no tail feathers. Is
that moult, or encounter with a predator?

Kelly Bettinger suggested Nashville warbler; Paulson and Wahl's book
doesn't show Nashville as occuring on the west side of the Cascades. I know
the birds don't read the books, but is Nashville at all likely?

Barbara Combs suggested MacGillivery's, and Kelly Cassidy suggested
Townsend's or Hermit: of all suggestions, the Peterson's recording of the
Hermit is the closest to what I heard, but it ain't the same. So unless
someone else has another suggestion, and until I can get some more
northwest specific recordings, I'm content to call it a probable Hermit.
Wish it would come back and give me another try...

Thanks again for all the help.
