Jim spends weekdays on Eastern Island, Midway Atoll, which is studied from a
small tent camp. USFWS leads weekly walks at Eastern, which, thanks to
abandonment by people and recent eradication of rats, is home to an astounding
community of nesting seabirds. Several of Midway's breeding species nest only
at Eastern.

Sand Island is where most of Midway's activity occurs. It's at 28 deg 12 min N,
177 deg 23 min W, the largest island, at 1200 acres, in the next-to-last atoll
of the Hawaiian archipelago.
