This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Wayne Weeber (sp?) reports seeing one of the UPLAND SANDPIPERS
in Round Valley, south of Cascade, ID, that was first spotted on June
3. Take ID 55 to milepost 101.6, turn east onto Round Valley Road.
Follow it 2 miles and turn left (north) on Bacon Creek Road. Go about
2 miles to Gatfield Road. The birds are in the meadow to the south of
the intersection of Bacon Creek and Gatfield, often about 0.25 mile
west of the intersection. This is all private land, the landowner is not
a birder. Mind your manners and stay on the road and out of the way.
ID DeLorme 43, C4. Also in Round Valley, along Spur Road, Wayne
saw a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, and 2
SANDHILL CRANES.

The BLACK-THROATED SPARROW is still being seen near Vantage,
WA. The bird is along Wanapum Road, about 0.6 miles south of I-90,
on the west side of the Columbia River. WA DeLorme 52, A1.

Shirley Sturts reports two calling COMMON POORWILLS between
Twin Lakes and Spirit Lake, ID, northwest of Coeur d'Alene. The birds
have been present since May 16 near the home of Cindy and Rick
Langlitz. To go for the birds, please call the Langlitz' at
208-687-2475. Apparently birds were also present last summer. ID

Ila and Dan Svingen found a pair of nesting WHITE-HEADED
WOODPECKERS just east of Riggins, ID on July 3. From downtown
Riggins, follow US 95 south about 1 mile. At milepost 194.6, turn left
(east) on Big Salmon River Road, zero your mileage, and follow it
upstream. Near the hot springs, at mile 9.7 is Allison Creek Road, aka
FR 221. Follow Allison Creek Road to milepost 58 and the birds.
Along the Big Salmon River Road you'll also see plenty of LEWIS'S
WOODPECKERS. ID DeLorme 51, B4.

A BAND-TAILED PIGEON is visiting serviceberry bushes at the home of
Tom Besser in Moscow, ID. Tom first saw the bird this morning, July
4. Tom lives north of Moscow at the base of Moscow Mountain. Call
him at 208-882-6254 for directions.

Also in the Moscow area is a readily accessible OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER near the home of Dave Holick, about 8 miles northeast
of Moscow. From the intersection of Mountain View and Joseph
Street in Moscow, head east on Joseph (which becomes Robinson Park
Road) following signs for Robinson Park. Stay on pavement about 4.5
miles to Robinson Park and then turn right onto unmarked, but paved,
Randall Flat Road. Follow Randall Flat about 2.3 miles until it turns to
gravel, staying left at the intersection of Randall Flat and Brood. In
about 0.25 miles, turn left onto Showalter Road. Stay right on
Showalter at the "Y" intersection in 0.5 miles and in another 0.3 mile
you'll arrive at the Holicks. The bird is calling from the south side of
the road, from the conifers edging the hay field. It's private ground so
tread lightly. ID DeLorme 58, BC-1.

Of interest to Moscow birders, Dave Holick reports a hen WOOD DUCK
and 3 chicks in the Syringa Sewage Ponds, which is 2.5 miles east of
the intersection of Mountain View and Joseph Street in Moscow.

It's time to think shorebirds. John and Marty Hirth got a spectacular
jump on fall migration by observing a fall out at Tolo Lake, which is
just west of Grangeville, ID, on June 29. Hirths saw 9 MARBLED
GODWITS, 14 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 11 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES,
16 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 13 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and 1
LESSER YELLOWLEGS. Except for a few peeps, none of these birds
were present on July 1. Tolo Lake is on ID DeLorme 55, C4, south of
Fenn and west of Grangeville.

The Hirths also saw a singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROW near
Keuterville, ID on June 29. The bird was 2 miles north of Keuterville
along Keuterville Road, which the DeLorme calls Salmon River Road.
Keuterville is more or less west of Cottonwood. ID DeLorme 54, B3.
