Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday July 10. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

On July 7 two HORNED PUFFINS, one in full breeding plumage, were on the
ocean off Harris Beach State Park near Brookings. After two hours of
observation they disappeared offshore.

The OVENBIRD netted and banded June 23 at Odessa Campground at the south
end of Upper Klamath Lake was recaptured at the same place July 2.

On July 6 eighteen ELEGANT TERNS were at Siltcoos Outlet, south of Florence
and ten were at Alsea Bay farther north. They may have been the same birds.


A flock of 20 SURFBIRDS was at Yachats July 6. Early SURFBIRDS, BLACK
TURNSTONES, and SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were on the beach south of Seal Rock
State Park June 30. Good numbers of shorebirds are now migrating along the
coast including many WHIMBREL, dowitchers, and both yellowlegs. Peeps are
still in low numbers but a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER in full breeding plumage
was at the South Jetty of the Columbia River July 3.

Very few birds can be seen over the very warm offshore waters, but
increasing numbers of CASSIN'S and RHINOCEROS AUKLETS and MARBLED MURRELETS
are showing up close to the beaches and in estuaries.

Columbia and Willamette River waters have dropped considerably in recent
weeks opening recently flooded birding areas. On July 6 a RED-EYED VIREO
was heard singing at the Virginia Lake colony on Sauvie Island.

Three FORSTER'S TERNS were at Baskett Slough NWR near Salem July 3. The two
summering GREAT EGRETS are still being seen there.

Three BLACK SWIFTS and a PURPLE MARTIN were at Salt Creek Falls along
Highway 58 southeast of Eugene July 6. The swifts are in low numbers there
this summer but apparently are still nesting in the area.

Two GNATCATCHER nests were found July 4 in sage and juniper at the Harney
and Malheur county line east of Drewsey.

The road to the top of Steens Mountain is now open. Five BLACK ROSY-FINCHES
were at the Alvord overlook July 3, and were seen again the next day.
