Not really a birding issue, other than using these roads to get to the
birds, however, the abuse and numerous subsidized roads built and
maintained for logging has to be slowed. I'd rather hike to see the birds
anyday. Norm Dicks, once again, shows his real side when its vote time.
He favors the reintroduction of wolves into the Olympics, while continueing the
introduction of roads into animal habitat. Um!
Just like a (some) politician!

Thanks to everyone who called their Representative as part of the
National Call-In to end new logging roads. Grassroots pressure has made a
huge difference in this effort to end subsidies for logging roads. As a result,
there is growing momentum on Capitol Hill in support of the
Porter/Kennedy/Kasich amendment which brings us within reach of a victory.
But we need to keep the pressure on.

We expect the vote to happen tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, July
10 and are urging everyone to call their Representatives once again to
support the Porter/Kennedy/Kasich Amendment. You can reach your
Representative by dialing 800/962-3524 or 202/224-3121. Please call as
early in the day as possible (particularly if you are on the West Coast).

Note: Several activists were unable to use the 800 # during Tuesday's Call-In
because the Capitol Switchboard was overwhelmed and the calls were never
answered by the switchboard operator. You can also dial your Representative
directly. Please call WAFC if you are unable to get through and you don't
have your Rep's number.


Dicks and DeFazio Leading Charge Against Amendment
Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) sent a Dear Colleague letter to the House
of Representatives today attacking the Porter/Kennedy/Kasich amendment.
DeFazio's letter makes clear he is seeking to undercut Porter/Kennedy. Rep.
Norm Dicks (D-WA) indicated he is strongly opposed to the Porter/Kennedy
amendment and is likely to lead the debate against it on the House floor.
Oregon activists please contact Rep. DeFazio and Washington activists please
contact Rep. Dicks in addition to your own Representative and urge them to
stand up for the environment by supporting Porter/Kennedy and to stop
advocating the subsidized destruction of our National Forests.
