Nighthawks are being sighted in oregon and other parts of upper
northwest US, this first half of July.
Nighthawks are expected fairly predictably over central piedmont
regions of virginia in mid-august.
I understood that the migration was toward south america.

I inquire:
What path do the birds take through US ?
Is the migration pattern mostly southward, and where are they originating
? This attraction is fairly popular in central virginia.. at dusk
usually during those few weeks in August, a gathering of birders is found
in several local parks.. along with interested 'non-birding' people.
The local newspaper prints the "observation event" as a public notice
under recreational topics/community calendar.

Do other areas also find 'nighthawk passing' as a community
interest ?
