Hi Tweets! I just got back from a trip to Chelan to help my husband in
the hang gliding competetition. Since I had tons of time while waiting
for the winds to be just right for homo sapian avius to fly, I looked
around on Chelan Butte and vicinity for some interesting birds. On the
Butte I saw the following birds nesting and/or feeding young: WESTERN
BLUEBIRDS, SAGE SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS,
RED-SHAFTED FLICKERS, MEADOWLARKS, ROBINS, LEWIS' WOODPECKER. Also seen
on the Butte: PEREGRINE FALCONS, TOWEES, VAUX'S SWIFT, RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD, CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, CALIFORNIA QUAIL. Seen in Beebe Park
on the Columbia: "BULLOCK'S" ORIOLES (feeding young), EASTERN KINGBIRDS,
CLIFF SWALLOWS, CAVE SWALLOWS, BANK SWALLOWS, ROUGH WINGED SWALLOWS,
WESTERN KINGBIRD, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, RING-BILLED GULLS, CASPIAN TERNS,
KILLDEER, MOURNING DOVES. Seen on the flats across the Columbia:
AMERICAN KESTRELS, HARRIERS,TURKEY VULTURES, RED TAIL HAWK, ROUGH LEGGED
HAWKS, HORNED LARKS. I think the low pressure front which was over us
most of the week kept many other birds in hiding. Also, my circumstances
kept me from extensive searching, but I had a good time anyway. I found
it very rewarding to watch many of these birds for hours at a time on the
Butte as they tended their nests and fed their young.
