It was extremely buggy; this is considered a moderate year for insects. I
don't see how Downeast Maine people can go outside in a "normal" year
given the experience of our field group.
A 20% DEET repellent will inhibit mosquitoes for about 2 hrs per
application. The biting flies (I mean BIG welt biting flies) do not seem
to be put off more than the first few minutes (while the stuff is still
drying!) by Deep Woods Off-type sprays/creams. Wearing netting over
a brimmed hat would be advisable. The wind blowing helps a lot, but that
makes birding much harder. Trade-offs, always trade-offs! Still thinking
about my reports on this trip. Birds, scenery, and seafood were magical.
