Hi everyone.

Sunday afternoon I heard and then spotted two bald eagles from my home on the
west side of the Arboretum. The bald eagles were actually some distance away,
circling the Squire Park/Seattle University neighborhood.

What else have I seen and heard in the neighborhood? Flickers, a jay,
swallows, a few varied thrush, flocks and flocks and flocks of robins and
starlings and sparrows. The real joy has been watching the young birds learn
the ropes from parents.

Hikers might venture to Tonga Ridge-Mt. Sawyer in search of blue grouse and
rufous hummingbirds. The blue grouse is easily heard but difficult to spot,
the hummingbirds much less so. Tonga Ridge is a very easy and lovely
subalpine hike. Bring insect repellent, the trail is moist and the mosquitoes
are hungry. Cedar waxwings have once again taken up residence at milepost 38
in Index and you'll find flocks hunting the wild salmonberry and stationary
Himalaya.
