I went to Ocean Shores today with a couple of friends
to do a jetty count and miscellaneous birding. The jetty was
fogged in til at least noon so we skipped the count, but we
looked for the Elegant Terns reported near the sewage pond -
lo and behold - there were over 100 of them! Park at the sewage
ponds and walk around the south side of the fence and then east
towards the sandy beach. At 10:30 AM, three and a half hours
after low tide, there was a sandbar about 30 yards offshore with
about 105 Elegants and 20+ Caspian Terns. We were awestruck to
see what was a life bird for all three of us in such a large
group, and in such a great setting. The terns stayed put for at
least an hour, getting up and flying en masse several times,
allowing us to see the wing pattern and listen to the calls. They
were mostly alternate plumaged, with a minority in basic.
