Columbia Estuary Report - 7/21/97

There were 14 ELEGANT TERNS on the flat near the Sewage Plant
on the Necanicum Estuary today at about 1630hr. There were none
there this morning at 0930hr. There is apparently a right and
wrong time of day for tern spotting.

A single WHIMBREL was at the Necanicum this morning. I also drove
Clatsop Beach at low tide this morning. 131 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,
23 SANDERLINGS and 4 WESTERN SANDPIPERS. There were many CASPIAN
TERNS on the beach as well.

800 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and 10 SEMI PLOVERS were on Trestle Bay
at low tide.

High tide at the SJCR was disappointing. There were no shorebirds
at the parking lot C flats. A single BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and
about 25 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were on the river beach along with
about 400 CASPIAN TERNS.
