Though a bit belated, I thought I'd pass on a White-winged Crossbill
sighting from Snohomish County. A birding friend was out on FS Rd. 41 east
of Granite Falls (Delorme 96 C-2) about 10 miles up the road when she
spotted a female white-winged Crossbill. She is relatively new to birding
and at an elevation of 3600 ft. was not sure what the finch-type bird was.
Her description was a chunky finch about 6+ inches long, with 2 distinct
white-wing bars and a fairly heavily streaked breast. She was not sure
about the crossing of the bill, but it did call and so I played the
white-winged Crossbill call for her and she said that it sounded very
similar. By the thickness of the wing bars as described I'm guessing it
was a female not a immature bird.
