One of the best books available apparently is entitled "Ou voir
les oiseaux en France." It's in French of course, but if that's no
problem for you, it's reputed to be the best by French ornithologues. You
might try listening in on the "ornithologie" list, or on a wider European
bird list (which I am sure you can find links to via the excellent
Tweeters web page in some fashion or another) which accepts posts in
English.
