Greetings,
I've just returned from a nice family trip from northern
California, up past Shasta and Klamath and hwy 97 to Pendleton, OR,
then over to the Puget Sound area, and finally back down I-5 with
a stop near Williams, OR (near Medford). My birding was limited
to small excursions, usually solo, but I did manage over 120 species
with no coastal birds.

Highlights included:
-great views of my life VEERIES near Pendleton (thanks to Mike
Denny for directions); I had them at MP 15 on the Umatilla River,
and one up on the north fork in the natl forest.
-my life "CORDILLERON FLYCATCHER" also on the Umatilla River
near Pendleton, which promptly gave an intermediate call after
the regular call...
-my first GOSHAWK in years at Winema NF, OR
-a marvelous experience with BARRED OWLS thanks to Vicki Biltz!
-the usual pair of MARBLED MURRELETS off my in-laws deck in
Fircrest on Sunset Beach Road (two pairs one day)
-PURPLE MARTINS nesting on pilings at Titlow Park in Tacoma
and Fair Harbor Marina by Treasure Island in the south Sound
-COMMON NIGHTHAWKS at Winema NF in s. Oregon and Treasure Island
-lots of landbirds, including 5 empids, 4 vireos, and 8 warblers,
many feeding young (RED-EYED VIREO at Umatilla River and Nisqually
Refuge)
-few COWBIRDS, though I saw 7 young being raised, one by a
Yellow-rumped Warbler and the rest all by Song Sparrows
-PILEATEDS at Redmond and Treasure Island
-BONAPARTES GULLS on July 14 in Puget Sound
-a conversation with a WESTERN SCREECH-OWL near Williams, OR
-and the most interesting bird was a juvenile gull at Titlow
Park in Tacoma that was a dead ringer for a Lesser Black-backed
Gull; unfortunately, I got a few folks overly excited before I
finally got in touch with Dennis Paulson, who helped me figure out
it was a juv Calif. Gull with a solid (completely solid) black
bill-- note the tail was nearly solid black, wrong for LBB.

Below is a list of species seen, which I broke up to help the
Oregon bird atlas folks.
WOODSN is Woodson Bridge SP near Chico, CA, and surrounding area.
SHASTA is birds along hwy 97 between Weed and Klamath
WINEMA is at the Williamson River campground in the Winema
Natl Forest just off hwy 97; very birdy here.
WILLMS is along Cave Camp Rd s. of Williams, OR
PENDTN is Pendleton and the Umatilla River upstream
TACOMA is basically all of the south Sound, including a trip
to Nisqually Refuge.

email me if you want more precise location descriptions.
