Saturday, May 31, about noon, two of us saw a bird that I'd like to describe
to you and ask that anyone who visits Robinson Canyon, Eastern Washington, to
look for it. After entering the L. T. Murray Wildlife area, we parked the car
in the open field area, facing the hill. On the right edge of the "meadow"
there are many small and tall trees. About half-way down in one of the
tallest dead trees with the long thin branches we saw an intensely yellow
bird. We both described the bird as having a black line through the eye,
gray and white wings, slender bill, darkish tail. Before others in the
group could see the bird, it flew down into the dense foliage. We didn't
relocate it. The two of us again compared what we thought we saw and upon
looking in two field guides we were struck by how only one bird was "exactly"
as we remembered it. The Blue-winged Warbler. We made another attempt to
see or hear the bird before leaving the area a couple of hours later, but
couldn't find it.
