institute since it includes the courses "Biology and Conservation of

Looking for summer courses? You might consider the Cascade Ecology
Institute begin held at Pack Forest this summer. See below for details.

Environmental Setting:

The Cascade Ecology Institute is a summer credit program administered by
the University of Washington's College of Forest Resources. The Institute
will be held June 23-July 23 at the Charles Lathrop Pack Demonstration
Forest northeast of Mount Rainier National Park, approximately 75 miles
south of Seattle.

Pack Forest includes a campus where students, staff, and faculty live in
summer cabins scattered among Douglas firs and Western hemlocks typical of
Western Washington. Students and faculty are able to use modern
classrooms and laboratories within easy walking distance of the sleeping
quarters. Students and faculty dine together in a comfortable dining
hall. The academic atmosphere provides an opportunity for students to
interact with faculty and other students in the classroom, on field trips
and during informal seminars.

Courses:

Courses are the same ones offered on the main campus of the University of
Washington during the regular academic year, with the advantage of more
field studies, greater interaction with the faculty and a more interactive
disciplinary approach. It is recommended that all 14 credits be taken as
a core program. The lecture and lab schedule with interdisciplinary field
trips makes this the most fulfilling option. If you have already had some
of these courses, contact Dr. David Manuwal for an exemption.

ESC 322, Forest Ecosystems, 3 credits. Principles of forest ecology,
vegetation classification, succession, competition, nutrient cycling,
ecology and classification of decomposers; applications to forest
management.

F M 435, Forest Entomology, 3 credits. Introduction to general
entomology, characteristics, life histories, ecological relations,
prevention, and control of forest insect pests.

F M 436, Laboratory in Forest Entomology, 2 credits. Introduction to
forest insect orders; identification of forest insects and their damage.
Field trips required. Field trip fee required.

ESC 451, Biology and Conservation of Birds, 3 credits. Natural history,
avian reproductive biology, community and population ecology, conservation
strategies for birds.

ESC 452, Field Ornithology, 3 credits. Students learn field
identification skills and are introduced to field methodologies through
required field exercises and field trips. Exercises include study of
sampling techniques, feeding ecology and behavior. Field trip fee
required.

Costs:

Regular Summer 1997 tuition plus there is an addition materials /lab fee
of $155. Room and board is $510 (in cabins housing 4 students each).
There is an addition $40 technology fee. Some courses have field trip
fees.
