The Washington BirdBox is a voice mailbox sponsored by the Washington
Ornithological Society. To leave a message about a notable sighting, or
to listen to the most recent messages, call (206) 454-2662 and follow
the prompts. First-time BirdBox users may find it convenient, before
calling, to review the status of Washington's chickadee species.

The Washington Ornithological Society would like to see the BirdBox
become a statewide aid to Birders. One of the reasons for this transcription
is as a service to those outside the local calling area and for people living
outside WA who are interested for whatever reason. We would like to offer an
email transcription service to anyone with a message for the BirdBox. (The
email will be placed as a phone message as well as an errorfree message on
the transcription). Send your message to halop at u.washington.edu with cc to
norton360 at aol.com, subplot at u.washington.edu & cehill at u.washington.edu (the cc
are in case Hal Opperman is out of town and the only cc really necessary is
to whoever is transcribing at the time you submit the message). Those active
birders and TWEETERS subscribers living outside the (206) area are requested
to let their non TWEETERS birding friends know this service is available and
to offer to post the message for them.

(My apologies to anyone whose name I have mangled. If anyone can supply
correct spellings of peoples names or place names, I am trying to keep a
list of correct spellings so those corrections would be appreciated).

10:09 PM, May 29 - Dave Swain(sp) 932-6603. Steve Barnes(sp) and I just got
back from a four day boat trip to the eastern edge of Kittitas County on the
Columbia River north of Vantage. A long way off and difficult to get to
except by boat but we had two sightings that I thought worthy of reporting
none-the-less. The first was a first winter Yellow-billed Loon about four
miles up the river from Crescent Bar. The second was a likly breeding pair of
Ash-throated Flycatchers about a four mile hike up Tekison Creek. There was
also a single bird near the mouth of Quilomene Creek. Thank you.

[I am not absolutely sure of the the creek names but is my best guess
based on listening to the tape and looking at the DeLorme Atlas. I will try
to phone Dave Swain and will redo the message if I am wrong. If anyone knows
Dave Swain and where he lives I would appreciate that. The lack of an area
code makes phoning a matter of guessing. This is a plea for using area codes
when leaving messages on the Birdbox especially when you live in a different
geographical region from where you saw the birds.]

6:49 PM, May 30 - Robert and Mary Dinell(sp) (206) 543-1506. Yesterday, May
29 around 12 Noon there were a pair of Red-necked Phalarope at 3 Crabs Pond
near Sequim. Thank you. [transcribers note: Judy Mullally and I independently
also saw the pair later in the afternoon. They could not be found on
subsequent days.]

6:46 PM, May 31 - Gary Bletsch, (360) 853-7203. Today there were three
Yellow-headed Blackbirds at Corkindale Creek. That's in Skagit County just
west of Marble mount at milepost 103.

6:45 PM, June 1 - Hi! This is Scott Downes, 361-7073. This weekend I was over
in the Potholes with a group of birders from Kitsap Audubon. Among noteworthy
sightings was a secondhand report of another birder having two breeding
plumaged Franklin's Gulls at Potholes SP. The birds were seen about 6:45
yesterday morning and when I looked today, I could not find them. Other good
birds were Solitary Sandpiper at the intersection of Frenchmen's Hill Road
and Dodson Road, the first noted Yellow-headed Blackbirds in the Potholes
region this year at about 9 o'clock this morning. Also, the other good bird -
we had a very active pair of Burrowing Owls along the Masters(??) and Highway
26 east of Othello - probably about 3 miles east and right at the
intersection there with some young - if you look carefully. Thanks. Good luck
and good birding.

10:54 PM, June 1 - Hi! This is Stephen Mlodinow. Casey Beachel(sp) and I went
to Spencer Island and also poked around the Everett Sewage Ponds and the
Everett Waterfront today. Highlights were Bank Swallow and Purple Martin at
Spencer Island. I have yet to find the Arctic Terns that usually hang around
the Everett Waterfront. If anyone else has located these birds, it would be
good to put it on Birdbox. That's about it. Good luck and good birding!

10:53 AM, June 2 - This is Ed Swan at (206) 725-5013. On June 1 there was a
Least Flycatcher near Moses Meadow in Okanogan County.

10:21 AM, June 3 - Hi! My name is Randy Gray(sp) and I live on the Inglewood
Golf Course in northeast Lake Washington up in Bothell and on June 1, about
6:45 in the evening, a couple of large Chukars walked through my yard.
Thanks.

4:46 PM, June 3 - Hi! This is Stepen Mlodinow. Today there were 42 Marbled
Murrelets off of the Edmunds Fishing Pier - some at virtually point blank
range. So if you want to get a good look at this bird in breeding plumage,
that seems to be the place to do it. Good luck and good birding!

5:16 PM, June 3 - This is Don Stuffey(sp) in Edmonds regarding Stephen
Mlodinow's request for information on Arctic Terns. In Everett I did see two
Arctic Terns on the Everett Waterfront on May 14. They were on Jetty Island
right between the South Marina and the Anthony's area and Jetty Island there.
I did not relocate them on two subsequent visits to the Everett Waterfront.
So, they were there, briefly. Thanks for listening.

6:05 PM, June 3 - Hi! This is Branch(sp) Grissom(sp) 329-4194. And for all
you Montlake Fill afficiandos at 5:15 today June 3 there was a pair of
Western Kingbirds west of the main pond towards the football stadium in some
blackberry thickets with a sapling poking up through them and, as well, there
were a pair of Spotted Sandpipers and 5 Blue-winged Teal males. So, good luck
and good birding. Thanks.

2:49 PM, June 4 - This is Hugh Jennings at (425) 746-6351 in Bellevue
Washington. I have a friend that lives a couple of blocks from the Phantom
Lake Tennis Courts in Bellevue that has been reporting up to 12 Red
Crossbills at one of his sunflower seed feeders in his back yard. I finally
got over there about 2 o'clock this afternoon and definitely I saw a pair of
the Red Crossbills. They said they'd been coming there off and on and up to
12 of them. Thank you. Goodby.

9:32 PM, June 4 - Good evening. This is Brian Bell, area code (425) 485-8058.
Today at approximately a quarter of three, Michael Hobbs and I saw a
Black-throated Sparrow on the east side of the Wanapum Road about a mile and
a half south of the I-90 exit. The bird was singing, was a male perched on
top of a sagebrush and we were able to observe it and listen to it for about
a minute and a half. Anyone that goes looking for it, hope you can find it.
Thanks, bye bye.
