I guess I'll add my 2 cents to Jack's comment about the 3 birds on log
(that sounds like a lead off to a punch line).

"Kittiwakes are highly aerial. About the only time I saw them alight on
structures on the open Pacific is during Force 9 storm winds when not
even they could remain airborne wihtout being torn apart. Too bad Richard
Rowlett isn't still around to add his two cents in here. He has much more
experience at sea than I do."

When I was on a halibut boat a couple summers ago in the Gulf of Alaska
we had Black-legged Kittiwakes roosting on the bow of our boat. I was
able to walk over and pick up one of the birds. I don't know who was
more surprised me or the bird. I agree though they seem to be airbone
most of the time but I have never seen Sabine's Gulls land for more than
a few seconds.
