I suppose this is a little late on the harrier hunting birds and so
forth thread, but for what its worth last year Clarice and I helped
one day in one of the banding blinds at Cape May, with Wendy Gibble,
a Seattle local who volunteers out there. We and others caught harriers using starlings
for bait, so at least they have no qualms about jumping one of them.
Harriers were about the most interesting hunters to watch because you
could see them for so long from the blind, just drifting by and then
pouncing. Also-- a little tidbit-- Wendy told us (and we tried it
and it worked) that you can call them in by making your typical
birders kissing sound on the back of your hand, just do it loud.
If you see one obviously drifting by, call it like that and it will shift
directions and come in.
