Sightings for Sunday June 8

RARE BIRD ALERT. A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was located this morning singing
in a woodlot north of University Hill Elementary School on Acadian Rd. in
the U.B.C. area. It was present from 9a.m. till about 2p.m. A
Black-and-white Warbler was also heard singing near this location.

A SOOTY SHEARWATER was seen from the end of the Iona South Jetty this
evening. 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were with CANADA GEESE on the Iona
causeway and 3 male CANVSABACK were off the causeway. A WESTERN KINGBIRD
was in the old subdivision on Sea Island.

A BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen at Wreck Beach. Previous sightings of this
bird in the checklist area have turned out to be escaped birds, so this
sighting is also suspect.

2 PURPLE MARTINS and 10 CASPIAN TERNS were at Blackie Spit.

Sightings for Saturday, June 7th

On a VNHS field trip to Colony Farm it was discovered the WESTERN KINGBIRDS
are again nesting. They have constructed a nest on the first tower west of
Mary Hill Rd. The nest can easily be seen from the paved parking area. Also
along the north dike was a CHIPPING SPARROW. Other birds of note were
RING-NECKED DUCK and CINNAMON TEAL.

Two TURKEY VULTURES were seen soaring over the Polo Fields near 176th & 8th
in south Surrey.

In the Ridge meadows area were 6 SANDHILL CRANE, several GRAY CATBIRDS, 5
AMERICAN BITTERNS, and 3 GREEN HERON.

In Derby Reach Park were 3 BARRED OWL.

Sightings for Friday, June 6th

GREEN HERONS were reported from Trinity Western University in Langley and
near the intersection of Salmon & Ferguson Rd. on Sea Island. A WILLOW
FLYCATCHER was also seen near this location. Both SORA & VIRGINIA RAIL were
heard calling in the morning and evening from the Iona Causeway.

An OSPREY was observed near the Trinity Western Campus.

In a late report a PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from the 3:15 sailing of the
Tsawwassen to Nanaimo ferry near the Fraser River.
