Richard -
I saw my Flamulated Owls in the south Okanagan (Canadian side) in the
habitat Jack described. I heard my first owl though on a University field
trip to the Grand Canyon. We went owling one night and had a Flamulated
calling very close. All 15 of us had our trusty flashlights trained on
what we were certain was eye shine from the little beggar. It soon became
obvious that what we were looking at was pine sap reflecting light (the
owl hooted from behind us and his "eyeball" stayed put). That field trip
was in 1984 and it took me 11 more years before I actually saw the owl.
Chin up you'll get to see one eventually.
