Columbia Estuary Report - BBS Edition
June 14, 1997

I ran the Nicolai Mountain Breeding Bird Survey this morning.
The day started out a bit drizzly, but became reasonable by
about mid-survey.

Species numbers about as expected. Two species new to the survey
where AMERICAN BITTERN and COMMON SNIPE. The snipe was winnowing
like crazy over Blind Slough (Brownsmead) on Barendse Rd. This
is a breeding season first for me in Clatsop County.

This is the second year in a row that I have missed Olive-sided
Flycatcher. Other notable misses this year were House Finch and
House Sparrow.

BLACK-THROATED-GRAY WARBLERS continue their increase on the survey
(the regression statistic produces 99.9% confidence for the trend
over 8 years.) SWAINSON'S THRUSH also shows and significant increase,
but the confidence level is much less impressive. BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK shows a decline over 8 years, again with a weak level of
confidence.
