The Washington BirdBox is a voice mailbox sponsored by the Washington
Ornithological Society. To leave a message about a notable sighting, or
to
listen to the 12 most recent messages, call (425) 454-2662 and follow the
prompts. First-time BirdBox users may find it convenient, before
calling,
to review the status of Washington's chickadee species.

7:43 p.m. 06-12-97: Hi, my name is John Lace from Everett. I saw a COMMON
NIGHTHAWK on June 5th flying over the Boeing freeway at the intersection
with Highway 99. Umm--[message appeared to be cut off].

12:19 p.m. 06-13-97: I got cut off there. I'm trying to use your system
here to get in touch with Carolyn Copener [see 06-06, 9:46 p.m.; woman's
name sounded like Carolee Coulter when I transcribed messages]. My name's
Gregory Kishner, 206-283-9528. I'm interested in getting in touch with
Carolyn Copener regarding the WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER. She said she saw it
at Knap [sp?] Flat, and I'd like to talk with her more specifically about
it. She said the birds may be nesting there. Please give me a call,
Carolyn. Thank you.

12:31 p.m. 06-13-97: Hi, this is Tom Aversa, 206-782-7342. In the slow
days of summer, I see people leaving messages about odd-colored crows, so
I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon about an oddly plumaged bird. This
was a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, a singing male, and I'd be curious if anyone
has ever seen anything like this. This bird had a yellowish head, kinda
white but definitely with a wash of yellow down onto the back. The back
feathers were streaked brown. The white wing patch was larger than usual.
It appeared down on the breast and on the flank with the usual kinda
brownish color of the grosbeak. The beak was also black, which was kinda
unusual, but it was definitely singing, definitely a BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK. This bird was in Robinson Canyon, about three miles in,
probably. So anybody who's seen anything like this, give me a call--let
me know. Thanks.

11:52 a.m. 06-14-97: Hello, this is Jim Russell. Yesterday, Friday the
13th, I saw a HARLEQUIN DUCK on Pine Lake by Issaquah. Have not seen it
yet today. Will keep looking. It was a male. Did spend most of the
morning on Pine Lake, but have not seen it since. Thank you.

5:53 p.m. 06-14-97: This is Mary, 524-6818. I'm down at Magnuson Park
today. We saw two pairs of nesting BULLOCK'S ORIOLES. Go to the north end
of the park where the Sound Garden is. Right outside of the Sound Garden
go to the right, up the dog path, which is going south. Follow the path
as it heads west, and you'll come to a big mud puddle in the path. The
nest is up to the right on one of the sort of poplar-looking trees just
to the right of the mud puddle. The other nest was closer to the tennis
courts--just east of the tennis courts--again in a big poplar, a stand of
poplars there. Thanks. Bye.
