On Saturday I enjoyed a beautiful late-spring day in the Wenas/Oak Creek areas
and was delighted to find all the usual suspects plus several special treats.
A Burrowing Owl was perched on a fence post at the end of Sheep Co. Road, a
life-lister for me, and I was mesmerized by the interactions between a pair of
nesting Lewis Woodpeckers and a very persistent Prairie Falcon in a snag along
Umtanum Rd.

I was disappointed to find that the entire Wenas Campground and surrounding
areas were under siege by an archery club which was conducting a formal
competition. It was necessary to proceed several miles up Wenas Creek to feel
safe from stray projectiles while birding the creekside and pine-sagebrush
slopes. I wonder if there's a way to know in advance of such scheduled
activities?
