Hi All,
After reading Ben and Peggi Rodgers' comments on the prevalence of bears
this year, I had to reply that even here in southern California, in the
towns of Beaumont and Banning, four separate yearling black bears have been
seen. These guys (or girls) come out of the nearby mountains and visit the
two cities several times a week. The Dept. of Fish and Game has been
called out on numerous occasions to tranquilize, capture, relocate, climb
trees, etc. to try to discourage this sudden bear "tourism". The bears
amble through neighborhoods, raiding trash cans, and even attended an
elementary school (after school hours, thank God). They are seen in broad
daylight as well as nighttime. Sgt. Rick Hohmann of the Banning Police
Dept. said " We're getting them every other night in town". It's the
busiest season anyone can recall.

Good birding and bearing !
