Steve Mansfield wrote in justified annoyance to junk email:

" Does this list not prohibit posting from non-subscribers? Or did this
butthead subscribe in order to post? If the former, I will likely
unsubscribe until such time as it does implement this. I get enough of
this crap as a moderator. I don't need it on my mailing lists. If the
latter, I hope they're flogged senseless...."

Hi folks,

I'd like to stick in my 2 cents worth on this subject, before the train gets too far down the track. First off, I agree with Steve that the perpetrators of junk email should be subjected to corporal punishment, at the very least. At best, we could have the legislatures impose strict financial penalties on junk mail, junk email and telephone solicitations during our dinner times.....

I am not "subscribed" to Tweeters, preferring to browse the list (on Jack Siler's birding web page) at my convenience, rather than having 20+ additional messages to delete from my archaic Microsoft Exchange program daily. I have enjoyed the ability to participate in the Tweeters community for the past few years, and wish to continue to do so, as I occasionally have a small bit to contribute that I hope the rest of the group enjoys.

I would have to consider long and hard whether I would continue with Tweeters, if the list were subscription-only. I get too much directed email as it is, and it seems that I spend half my evenings deleting postings. Being able to browse the list, and to contribute when appropriate is very convenient for me, and I sincerely hope that the list remains as it is. Please don't change the list just because of one piece of unsolicited junk email.
