Columbia Estuary Report - 6/23/97

The fall migration has come to Oregon.

85 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were on Trestle Bay at Parking lot D this morning.
There are minus tides this week and much exposed mud flat.

The census of birds at Ft Columbia, Pacific Co. WA was unremarkable. Expected
numbers of breeding birds, no surprises.

BALD EAGLES are everywhere this summer. At least two are regularly hanging
out on the orange marker tower at parking lot C. Two more are regularly along
the trestle at Trestle Bay. There are at least 4 on lower Young's Bay and
at least a pair on upper Young's Bay. The pair at Ecola State Park seems
to be regularly harassed by an adult PEREGRIN FALCON. Summering adults
(presumably breeding) was once considered a news worthy thing, but lately
they're getting to be like herons on the lower Columbia.
