Hi Karen: Two other good buys are Buzz Scher's Booklet on Birds of the
Anchorage Area (ABA?) and the "Milepost", a magazine available in most
book stores. Nick Lethaby's book is good in general and would be helpful
for Denali and the Seward area. Scher's book gives 12 or so sites to bird
in Anch. and the Milepost gives mile by mile details of lodging, parks ,
etc., for all of the major highways in Alaska. If Scher's book is
unavailable, some worthwhile spots are Hillside Park (Boreal Chickadee,
Three-Toed Woodpecker, Spruce Grouse), Earthquake Park (follow N. Lights
Blvd.), Westchester Lagoon and the walk out to the shore along the bike
path for Shorebirds (follow Minnesota to 15th and work your way south,
Potters Marsh (S. on the Seward Highway), and the Ski slope reached by
following Arctic Boulevard off the Glenn Highway about 10 miles north
from Anchorage (Ptarmigan). In Seward, the trip to the National Park
that we liked was the 6 hr. one operated by the Kenai Fiords Co. (there
are 4 or 5 choices). A nice hike near Seward is to follow the creek
trail from Ptarmigan Creek Campground (Sign on the Seward Highway about
17 miles from Seward). John Hirth <Hirth at mme.wsu.edu>
