Columbia Estuary Report - 3/3/97

3 VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were with 20 or so TREE SWALLOWS along the the west
side of Youngs Bay today.

There were about 700 SANDERLINGS and 130 DUNLIN on Clatsop Beach, also an
impressive wreck of large jellyfish. No obvious dead birds. A flock of
200 SANDERLINGS were at the SJCR and around 2000 DUNLIN were on Youngs Bay.

I drove about 150 miles around Clatsop County attempting owls counts. Most
of my effort was between 1830hr and 2100hr on Saturday and Sunday night.
I did make a daylight trip for Pygmy Owls to Saddle Mt. It snowed...
The unsettled weather probably contributed to my lack of success.
The results follow:

Barn Owl (1 at Ft Clatsop answered to pishing)
Pymgy Owl (1 probable response at Tucker Creek)
Great Horned Owl (1 probable response Ft Clatsop)
Snowy Owl (2 at SJCR, seen Saturday and ~1530hr)
Virginia Rail (1 doing the Kick-kick call at Ft Clatsop)
Jungle Fowl (Ft Clatsop)
Peacock (Smith Lake)

I was especially surprised at the low number of Great Horned Owls given
the territory I covered.
