This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

The NORTHERN HAWK-OWL was still residing on the campus of Eastern
Washington University as of Feb 23. I haven't received any reports
since then. As a starting point, begin at the intersection of Washington
Street, which runs N-S, and Elm Street, which runs E-W on the EWU
campus. There's a large silo dormitory there and the football field is
immediately west. From this spot, the bird has been seen in all
directions but within a 0.5 mile, usually much closer. Check all possible
perches, especially going on foot. Also in the neighborhood are PINE
GROSBEAKS, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and a single BLUE JAY. Look
for the jay near Washington Street and 6th. Thanks to Jeff Wisman,
John Hirth, and Pat Burger for the updates. WA DeLorme p. 72, A4.

At least one SNOWY OWL is still residing along Detour Road, which
parallels US 2, about a mile south of US 2 between Davenport and
Reardon, WA. John Hirth reports a single bird Feb 22, along with a
couple of TUNDRA SWAN and 5 flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS, totaling
about 100 birds. WA DeLorme 87, C8 and 88, D2.

Idaho SNOWY OWLS, two of them, are still being seen on the Rathdrum
Prairie just west of Coeur d'Alene. Both Jeff Wisman and I saw the
birds at the north end of Atlas Road off Hayden Lake Road, just west of
the airport. Check near dusk. You can access this by taking ID 41
north from I-90 at exit 7 about three miles to Hayden Lake Road. Turn
right and follow it to Atlas. ID DeLorme 60, A1.

GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS are turning up everywhere. Gil Thompson
reports a second-year bird at Dworshak Dam near Orofino, ID on Feb 22,
along with a smattering of BALD EAGLES. ID DeLorme 58, C3. Jeff
Wisman spied a first-winter Glaucous-winged just northeast of the
Fighting Creek Landfill along US 95, between milepost 415.8 and 415.4,
south of Coeur d'Alene, ID on Feb 22, and John Hirth saw another just
west of the Coeur d'Alene Resort that same day. ID DeLorme 60, B1.

Mike and MerryLynn Denny saw at least 5 Glaucous-winged, along with
3 GLAUCOUS GULLS, including 1 adult, at the Walla Walla River Delta
just north of the junction of US 12 and US 730 in western Walla Walla
County, WA on Feb 23. Also at the delta were 100+ DUNLIN. WA
DeLorme 40, D1.

The adult male NORTHERN CARDINAL, first seen on Sun, Jan 5, in
Lewiston, ID is still being seen at the home of Lloyd and Helen Hogden.
To get there, take US 12 West into Lewiston, cross the Clearwater
River, and at the first traffic light, head up hill (south) on 21st
Street. At 16th Avenue, turn right (west) and continue to 8th Street,
which is the second traffic light. At 8th Street, turn left (south). As
you head up hill, and just past Mayfair Court, turn right (west) onto
Mayfair Drive. Follow this curvy road uphill, staying left onto Mayfair
Ridge. The Hogden's live at 2975 Mayfair Ridge, in a brown house with
brick accent on the left (east) side of the street.

A single NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL has been roosting in a small
clump of conifers in Rooks Park just east of Walla Walla, WA. Look for
the bird about 55' west of the restrooms, according to the Denny's.

The Denny's also report a single GREAT EGRET has been hunting in
fields along Detour Road, which heads west from College Place, WA and
parrallels US 12. WA DeLorme 41, D5.

Two NORTHERN PYGMY-OWLS were seen along the south fork of
Coppei Creek this past week by Mike and MerryLynn Denny. Coppei
Creek is east of Dixie, WA in southern Walla Walla County. Just east of
Dixie, at the large grain elevator, take Walker Road. At the fork, head
left down to Coppei Creek. Turn right and continue to the large parking
area. The birds were in this general area. WA DeLorme 41, C8.

An EURASIAN WIGEON / AMERICAN WIGEON hybrid, a male, is at
Leslie Groves Park in Richland, WA, according to Mike and MerryLynn.
Take Snyder Road off George Washington Way down to the Columbia
River and the bird.

Dale Goble reports two or three BLUE JAYS are being obvious in northern
Moscow of late. Look for the birds in their usual haunt, north of
Homestead, east of Polk, west of Orchard.

Three LONG-EARED OWLS are roosting just north of Moscow. Call me
at 208-883-0943 for more information. (As of 3/2/97, no longer
present).

The SIBERIAN ACCENTOR is still residing between Hailey and Ketchum,
ID, about a 3-hour drive northeast of Boise. The bird has been present
for about six weeks. Take ID 75 to Hailey and then continue another 5
miles north of town to milepost 122. Turn left onto Hidden Hollow
Road and go a couple of blocks, parking where Hidden Hollow turns
right into Easy Street. Walk down Easy Street to Abbey (sp?) Lane.
There is an old green trailer and cottage. The accentor is coming to the
birdfeeder at the cottage, often with chickadees, juncos, and American
Goldfinches. It also frequents the gray house further down the road.

Good birding!
