Effective conservation rarely requires all-or-none solutions. False
dichotomies of this sort are unfortunately often used by consumptive
industries in their efforts to prove that conservationists are
unrealistic.

Getting the large roasters like Starbucks to switch to shade-grown
coffee will do much more for avian conservation than if a small
number of conservationists stop drinking coffee.

And, of course, the two actions aren't mutually exclusive. One
presumably would do the most good by both ending one's personal
consumption and changing the purchasing habits of those who
don't care enough to quit.
