The Washington BirdBox is a voice mailbox sponsored by the Washington
Ornithological Society. To leave a message about a notable sighting, or
to listen to the most recent messages, call (206) 454-2662 and follow
the prompts. First-time BirdBox users may find it convenient, before
calling, to review the status of Washington's chickadee species.

(My apologies to anyone whose name I have mangled. If anyone can supply
correct spellings of peoples names or place names, I am trying to keep a
list
of correct spellings so those corrections would be appreciated).
The revision changes Mark Cirone to Marcus Roening and Scott Nesler to
Scott Downes. Thanks to Scott Downes for the corrections. It points out that
proper names are good places to slow down and ennunciate carefully although
how I changed Downes to Nesler I don't know

4:53 PM March 2 - Hi, this is Dennis Duffy in Edmonds. Today I drove out to
Shadow Lake south of Snohomish looking for the Ross' Goose that was reported
earlier last week and didn't find it there but did find it about half a mile
straight east there on the other side of the Snohomish River along Short
School Road. It was in a muddy pasture with Canada Geese and one domestic
goose and it was right near a farm with the address 14118 Short School Road.
Also, of interest to some, this morning there was an Anna's Hummingbird in
Edmonds at the Deer Creek Hatchery at 95 Pine Street. Thanks for listening.

7:27 PM March 2 - Hi, this is Jim Flynn in Renton at 772-5568. Scott Downes
and I went down to the Pe Ell area today to look for the sapsucker and it was
there about 12:15 PM and it was in the alder trees along the stream about,
oh, no more than a quarter of a mile up the street from where it was
originally seen, which is McCormick Road. So, from the turn from Highway 6 on
McCormick Road it is about a half mile up the road. Thanks a lot. Bye-Bye.

9:56 PM March 2 - Hi, my name is Stacy Alsop(sp.) and I'm a visitor from
Minneapolis so I'm only here for a couple of days visiting family. We saw a
possible, I really don't know how to pronounce it, Pochard, a rare duck, on a
little pond right inside the entrance to Tuscany Subdivision northeast of
Redmond in King County. It's just about at the intersection of 131st Street
and 199th. There were several of us looking at it with binoculars. It was
cloudy but sort of bright. The bird was not diving. It was very quiet on the
water. There was one other bird on that pond. There was a common ordinary
Coot on there. They paid no attention to each other. I don't know what kind
of binoculars we had but we had two pairs of binoculars with 4 or 5 of us
looking at it. The only other bird that we can think of it might have been
was a female Redhead but yet it didn't have the kind of fuzzy looking white,
light spot by the bill. It was very definitely a lighter color by the bill.
The head was very definitely darker than the the rest of the bird. There was
very much lightness on the side of the bird under the wing. Thank you.

4:43 PM March 3 - This is Bruce LaBar in Tacoma (206) 272-1058. Marcus
Roening and myself went down to Pe Ell today to look for the Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker and we were successful at around 1:30 to 2 o'clock. We were able to
observe the bird right where other people have been seeing it. Again it is
1.5 miles west of Pe Ell on McCormick Road. Just go up the road a little bit
and you'll find a place on the right hand side to park. The bird was directly
across to your left in a grove of maple trees and alder trees and then it
then it went further on down towards Highway 6 along the side of the road and
frequenting various deciduous trees. Be careful if you go further up
McCormick Road to the first house. Try and stay away from that house. There
is a very upset young man there who does not like birders and I would suggest
staying away from the house. The bird tends to be south of that house anyway
so stay away from the house. Anyway, good luck and good birding and that's
it.

5:38 PM March 3 - Hello, this is Patrick Sullivan reporting from Tacoma, WA
at (206) 564-7419. The male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker observed along McCormick
Road west of Pe Ell in Lewis County was again observed today between 8AM and
10:30AM. Other notable species in the area included 9 Wild Turkeys north on
McCormick Road and 10 Western Bluebirds in a clearcut east of McCormick Road.
Finally, a quick trip to Snohomish County produced one Ross' Goose
southsoutheast of Snohomish and one Golden Eagle east of Lowell in Snohomish
County. Thank you. Good luck and good birding.
