Ah, and on the bird front. Yesterday there was a host of sparrows - white
crowned (I can never get over how neat these guys look) with immatures. At
least I think they were immature white-crowned sparrows - got your junk ID
hat on, Don? They had bright rufus stripes with small lighter patches right
on the top of their heads. These appeared to be patches, rather than full
stripes. They resembled rufus-crowned sparrows shown in my old Audubon
field guide, but I think the region is wrong.

Also, the Meadowlarks are sporting their breeding colors now and are still
wandering around the same field.

The Mockingbirds have started to dance and sing all night, American
goldfinches are turning bright yellow and I've had at least a kilo of siskin
(or is it siskins) on the balcony.

I LOVE this time of year!
